Overview

Italy: The Long Way North

Eleven nights through four parts of northern Italy. Milan, then Lake Como, then the vineyard hills of Franciacorta, then five days at altitude in the Dolomites. The stages are distinct: urban, lacustrine, viticultural, alpine. Enough time in each to register what it actually is.

This suits couples who know northern Italy and want to move through it with structure. The sequence has its own logic. Each stage shifts the pace for the next, and the five nights at Forestis are long enough for the mountains to do what they do.

Signature Moments
I The Last Supper, in near silence

An early slot at the Cenacolo Vinciano, before the rooms fill. Less than half the surface visible today is original to Leonardo. The visit is arranged for the time of day when that registers properly.

II A full day on the lake

Departure from Passalacqua's private dock. North to Bellagio, east to Varenna, aperitivo on board for the return crossing as the light shifts across the water.

III Five nights at 1,800 metres

Guided hiking on the Plose ridgeline. A full morning under the Tree Circle spa protocol. Lunch at a rifugio beneath the Geisler peaks. Five nights is long enough for something to change.

Day by Day

Your Italy itinerary

Eleven nights across four distinct parts of Lombardy and the Dolomites. Late June to early July is the preferred window; early September works equally well.

Arrival . Milan
Into the city
PM Check in to Bulgari Hotel Milano The Bulgari occupies a renovated 18th-century palazzo on a quiet private street between the Quadrilatero della Moda and the Brera district. Its 4,000 sqm garden, adjacent to the Botanical Gardens, offers a degree of green and quiet that the centre of Milan rarely provides. Take the afternoon at your own pace.
Eve Aperitivo in the garden. Dinner at Il Ristorante Niko Romito, within the hotel.
Overnight: Bulgari Hotel Milano
Bulgari Hotel Milano
The Bulgari garden runs to 4,000 sqm and sits adjacent to the Botanical Gardens. It is the best argument for staying here rather than anywhere else in the Quadrilatero.
Day Two . Milan
Institutions and early access
AM The Last Supper, Santa Maria delle Grazie Early-slot access to the Cenacolo Vinciano. Slots are strictly timed and limited to small groups. Leonardo applied pigments to dry preparatory ground rather than wet plaster, meaning the paint was never permanently bonded to the wall. Deterioration was noted within two decades of completion. A 21-year restoration completed in 1999 removed centuries of overpainting; less than half the surface visible today is original.
AM Pinacoteca di Brera, private guided visit One of Italy's most important collections of painting, 13th to 20th century, in the Brera district.
Afternoon At leisure with your guide.
Eve Dinner at Enrico Bartolini al MUDEC Milan's only three-Michelin-starred restaurant, inside the Museum of Cultures on Via Tortona.
★ Early-slot viewing of The Last Supper, Santa Maria delle Grazie Overnight: Bulgari Hotel Milano
Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan
Slots sell out three to four months ahead. The early visit is the one to hold for.
Day Three . Lake Como
Arrival at Passalacqua
AM Private car to Lake Como Approximately one hour from Milan.
Midday Arrival and lunch on the terrace beneath the loggia Twenty-four rooms across three buildings, seven acres of terraced gardens, a private dock. Time to settle into the property and the lake.
Eve Aperitivo at the Bellini Bar. Dinner on the estate.
Overnight: Passalacqua, Moltrasio
Passalacqua, Lake Como
Passalacqua's western-shore position puts Bellagio and Varenna within easy reach by water. The private dock is the departure point for tomorrow.
Day Four . Lake Como
A full day on the water
AM Private boat from Passalacqua dock North along the western shore to Bellagio, where the lake divides.
Midday Bellagio, then Varenna Across to Varenna on the eastern shore. A walk along the waterfront, lunch overlooking the lake.
PM Return crossing Aperitivo served on board as the light shifts across the water.
Eve Dinner at Materia, Cernobbio Ten minutes from the hotel. Open Wednesday to Sunday.
★ Private boat from Passalacqua; Bellagio and Varenna Overnight: Passalacqua, Moltrasio
Lake Como private boat
Varenna sits on the eastern shore, quieter than Bellagio and often skipped. Worth the crossing.
Day Five . Lake Como
Villa del Balbianello
AM Private boat to Villa del Balbianello Arrive by private boat at Villa del Balbianello, on a wooded promontory near Lenno. A guided visit through the villa and its terraced gardens.
Afternoon At leisure The pool, a walk through Moltrasio, or the terrace.
Eve Dinner at the hotel.
★ Privately guided visit to Villa del Balbianello Overnight: Passalacqua, Moltrasio
Villa del Balbianello, Lake Como
The guided visit covers sections that general access does not include. Arrival by private boat is the correct approach; the road approach is unremarkable.
Day Six . Franciacorta
Into the vineyards
Midday Private car to Franciacorta; check in to L'Albereta Late breakfast before departing Lake Como. Approximately 90 minutes south-east. Lunch at L'Albereta overlooking the vines.
PM Private cellar visit at Ca' del Bosco, Erbusco Maurizio Zanella made his first harvest of Champagne varieties here in 1976. The estate now farms 300 hectares of organically certified vines; lees ageing on the prestige cuvee Annamaria Clementi reaches up to nine years. A guided cellar tour and tasting.
Eve Dinner at the hotel.
★ Private cellar visit and tasting at Ca' del Bosco Overnight: L'Albereta Relais and Chateaux
L'Albereta vineyard, Franciacorta
Franciacorta produces sparkling wine by the same method as Champagne: secondary fermentation in the bottle, extended lees ageing, disgorgement. The DOCG, established in 1995, was the first in Italy to apply exclusively to wine made this way.
Day Seven . Franciacorta
Espace Chenot
AM Morning at the Espace Chenot The Espace Chenot is the longest-running Chenot facility in Italy. A private consultation with a resident specialist establishes a programme tailored to your current state. Treatments are sequenced from there, combining Western diagnostics with principles of Chinese energetic medicine. The 2,000 sqm space includes an indoor pool, sauna, Turkish bath and fitness centre.
Afternoon The estate's 61-hectare park Contemporary sculptures set among the vineyards.
Eve Dinner at Leone Felice, the estate restaurant.
★ Morning wellness consultation at the Espace Chenot Overnight: L'Albereta Relais and Chateaux
Franciacorta vineyard
The consultation determines the treatment sequence. There is no fixed menu.
Day Eight . In transit
The long drive north
AM Depart Franciacorta after breakfast Private car to the Dolomites. Approximately 3.5 to 4 hours. The landscape shifts as the road climbs: vineyard plains give way to pre-Alpine foothills and then to the mountain approaches above Bressanone.
PM Arrival at Forestis After check-in, a short walk through the surrounding forest or time on the terrace as the altitude settles.
Eve Dinner marks the transition into a slower, more restorative rhythm.
Overnight: Forestis, Bressanone
The Dolomites
The access road to Forestis climbs from Bressanone up the Plose mountain. The hotel sits at 1,800 metres. The ascent is part of the arrival.
Day Nine . Forestis
The Plose ridgeline
AM Privately guided hike on the Plose mountain Routes move through forest and open alpine meadow toward the Odle (Geisler) peaks, whose sharp limestone formations define this section of the Dolomites. Tailored to pace and energy level; the route can extend along the ridgeline where conditions allow.
Midday Lunch at Forestis.
PM The Forestis Spa Indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, quiet spaces overlooking the Dolomites.
Eve Dinner at Forestis Chef Roland Lamprecht's forest cuisine in a terraced restaurant facing south across the Dolomite massif. Floor-to-ceiling windows; each table positioned for privacy and an uninterrupted view.
★ Private guided hike on the Plose ridgeline, views toward the Odle (Geisler) peaks Overnight: Forestis, Bressanone
Forestis pool, Dolomites
The Dolomites were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. The limestone around the Odle peaks is composed of ancient sea beds compressed over 250 million years. The rock turns orange and red at sunset.
Day Ten . Forestis
The Tree Circle protocol
AM Full morning at the Forestis Spa A treatment session built around the Tree Circle protocol. Each treatment is personalised to the guest's physical and energetic state, combining touch techniques, healing stones, sound frequencies and essences from one of four native trees: mountain pine, spruce, larch or Swiss stone pine.
Afternoon A walk through the forest from the hotel, or time on the terrace.
Eve Dinner at Forestis.
★ Full-morning treatment at the Forestis Spa, Tree Circle protocol Overnight: Forestis, Bressanone
Forestis spa, Dolomites
The choice of tree is made by the therapist on the day, based on your state at the time of the session.
Day Eleven . Forestis
Into the Puez-Odle
AM Into the wider Dolomites Scenic drive of approximately 45 to 60 minutes to the Puez-Odle natural park. The Adolf Munkel Trail: a gentle loop beneath the Odle peaks, through forest and meadow.
Midday Lunch at Rifugio delle Odle On the terrace, directly beneath the Geisler peaks.
Afternoon Return to Forestis. Afternoon and dinner at leisure.
★ Lunch at Rifugio delle Odle, beneath the Geisler peaks Overnight: Forestis, Bressanone
Forestis Dolomites hike
Morning weather in the Dolomites is generally stable; afternoon thunderstorms are common through summer. The excursion is structured to reach the rifugio before midday.
Day Twelve . Departure
Last morning in the mountains
AM No fixed programme A walk through the forest, the pool, or breakfast on the terrace.
Departure Onward transfer Departure after lunch. Transfer to Innsbruck Airport (approximately 2 hours), Verona Airport (approximately 2.5 hours), or Milan Malpensa (approximately 3 hours), depending on flight routing.
Forestis, Dolomites
Five nights at altitude changes the quality of the final morning. No recovery logic is built into the last day. That is intentional.

Each property is chosen for a specific stage of the journey. The Bulgari grounds the first two days in Milan. Passalacqua puts the lake at the centre. L'Albereta connects Franciacorta's vineyard landscape to its wine and its wellness. Forestis ends the journey at elevation.

Before You Book

Best time to travel

Late June to early July is the preferred window: ahead of the Italian domestic surge, the Dolomite trails fully open, wildflowers on the high paths. Early September works equally well, with cooler mountain temperatures and harvest beginning in Franciacorta. Mid-July through August brings peak pricing across all four properties and minimum stays at Forestis during peak weeks.

Planning your trip

The Last Supper requires booking three to four months ahead; early-slot summer access sells out quickly. Passalacqua's summer availability is limited. Plan to enquire at least four months ahead for a late June or early July departure.
