Overview

Italy's north is rarely treated as a single journey.

Milan, Lake Como, Franciacorta, the Dolomites: each is understood in isolation, visited separately, rarely connected. This itinerary moves through all of them in sequence, with enough time in each to register what changes and what doesn't.

The journey opens in Milan at the Bulgari, where early-access to the Last Supper and an evening at Enrico Bartolini al MUDEC, the city's only three-Michelin-starred restaurant, set the register. It moves north to Passalacqua on Lake Como, three nights at a property that operates with the logic of a private house. Then southeast into the vineyard hills of Franciacorta, where a cellar visit at Ca' del Bosco and a morning at the Espace Chenot wellness facility make two nights feel purposeful rather than brief.

The final five nights are at Forestis in the Dolomites at 1,800 metres, built around altitude, forest, the Tree Circle spa programme, and guided hiking across the Plose ridgeline. The journey ends not in a city but at elevation, with the particular quality of rest that mountains, given sufficient time, tend to produce.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Dolomites

Designated in 2009 for their geological and geomorphological significance. The rock's characteristic pale colour produces the enrosadira effect: the orange, red and purple hues the peaks take on at sunrise and sunset. A term from the Ladin language meaning "becoming pink."

Three Michelin Stars

Enrico Bartolini al MUDEC

Milan's only three-Michelin-starred restaurant, housed within the Museum of Cultures. Bartolini holds more Michelin stars than any other chef in Italy. Reservations require two to three months' notice; summer sittings fill and do not hold.

DOCG Appellation

Franciacorta

The first Italian appellation to apply exclusively to sparkling wine made by the traditional method. Ca' del Bosco farms 300 hectares of organically certified vines. Their prestige cuvée Annamaria Clementi ages on lees for up to nine years.

Day by Day

Your Italy itinerary

This journey works well from late June through early September. Late June to early July sits ahead of the Italian domestic surge; early September offers cooler Dolomite trails and the beginning of harvest in Franciacorta. Both windows work. Both are worth the choice.

01 Day One . Milan
Arrival in the Quadrilatero
PM Check in to Bulgari Hotel Milano Set on a quiet private street moments from the Quadrilatero della Moda, the Bulgari's 4,000 sqm private garden offers an immediate sense of calm within the city. The afternoon is at your own pace.
Eve Aperitivo and dinner at Il Ristorante Niko Romito Aperitivo in the garden provides a soft introduction to Milanese rhythm. Dinner at Il Ristorante Niko Romito within the hotel: an understated, elegant setting for the first night after arrival.
Overnight: Bulgari Hotel Milano
Bulgari Hotel Milano garden / Il Ristorante Niko Romito
The Bulgari Hotel Milano occupies a renovated 18th-century Milanese palazzo designed by Antonio Citterio and Partners. The garden is adjacent to the city's Botanical Gardens.
02 Day Two . Milan
Institutions and access
AM Early-access viewing of The Last Supper An early-slot visit to Santa Maria delle Grazie to experience Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper in near silence. One of the most sought-after cultural moments in Italy. Early-slot access requires booking three to four months in advance.
Mid AM Pinacoteca di Brera Continue to the Brera district for a private guided visit to the Pinacoteca di Brera, one of the country's most important collections. The afternoon is at leisure with your guide.
Eve Dinner at Enrico Bartolini al MUDEC Milan's only three-Michelin-starred restaurant, within the Museum of Cultures. Depending on exhibition schedules, an early arrival can allow a brief visit to the museum's galleries before the tasting menu begins.
★ Early-slot viewing of The Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie Overnight: Bulgari Hotel Milano
Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan / Pinacoteca di Brera
Less than half of the Last Supper visible today is original to Leonardo. The 21-year restoration completed in 1999 removed centuries of overpainting. Arriving early and with context changes what you bring to those twenty minutes in front of the wall.
03 Day Three . Lake Como
Arrival at Passalacqua
AM Private car to Lake Como Depart Milan by private car for Lake Como, approximately one hour, as the urban landscape gives way to the Alpine foothills.
Noon Arrive at Passalacqua, Moltrasio Arrive at Passalacqua, where terraced gardens descend through fountains and cypress to a private dock. Lunch served on the terrace beneath the loggia.
PM Settle into the property The afternoon is at leisure to settle in, use the pool, and enjoy the views. As evening falls, aperitivo at the Bellini Bar precedes dinner in one of several settings across the estate.
Overnight: Passalacqua, Moltrasio
Passalacqua, Moltrasio / Lake Como from the terrace
Passalacqua was opened in 2022 by the De Santis family. With 24 rooms across three buildings and seven acres of terraced gardens descending to a private dock, it operates with the logic of a private house rather than a hotel.
04 Day Four . Lake Como
On the water
AM Full-day private boat from the hotel's dock Depart directly from Passalacqua's private dock for a full day on the lake. Cruise north to Bellagio, where the lake divides, before continuing to Varenna on the eastern shore.
Noon Lunch in Varenna Time to walk the waterfront and take lunch overlooking the water. Return by boat in the late afternoon, with aperitivo served on board as the light softens across the lake.
Eve Dinner at Materia, Cernobbio A ten-minute drive from the hotel. Materia is open Wednesday to Sunday only; dinner reservations recommended four to six weeks in advance.
★ Private boat from Passalacqua, with visits to Bellagio and Varenna Overnight: Passalacqua, Moltrasio
Private boat on Lake Como / Varenna waterfront
Lake Como is 46 kilometres long and reaches a maximum depth of 410 metres. From the water, the scale and verticality of the surrounding landscape becomes clear in a way that the lakeside road does not reveal.
05 Day Five . Lake Como
Villa del Balbianello
AM Private boat to Villa del Balbianello Arrive by private boat for a guided visit through the villa and its terraced gardens, set on a wooded promontory above the lake. A shorter day out focused on a single destination.
PM Afternoon at Passalacqua The afternoon is open to enjoy time at the pool, a walk through Moltrasio, or simply the terrace with the lake below.
Eve Dinner at the hotel A quiet close to the lake stay, with dinner arranged on the estate.
★ Privately guided visit to Villa del Balbianello by private boat Overnight: Passalacqua, Moltrasio
Villa del Balbianello, Lake Como / Passalacqua pool terrace
Villa del Balbianello was the final home of explorer Guido Monzino, who left the property to FAI (the Italian National Trust) in 1988. Its loggia is one of the most photographed spots on the lake.
06 Day Six . Franciacorta
Into the vineyards
AM Depart Lake Como after a late breakfast Private car to the vineyard region of Franciacorta, approximately 90 minutes to two hours. Check in to L'Albereta and take lunch overlooking the vines.
PM Cellar visit and tasting at Ca' del Bosco In the late afternoon, visit Ca' del Bosco for a guided cellar experience and tasting, including their flagship cuvée. The estate farms 300 hectares of organically certified vines.
Eve Dinner at the hotel Return to L'Albereta for dinner.
★ Private cellar visit and tasting at Ca' del Bosco Overnight: L'Albereta Relais & Châteaux
Ca' del Bosco cellars, Franciacorta / L'Albereta vineyard views
Franciacorta produces sparkling wine by the same method as Champagne: secondary fermentation in the bottle, extended lees ageing and disgorgement. The DOCG appellation, established in 1995, was the first in Italy to apply exclusively to sparkling wine made by this method.
07 Day Seven . Franciacorta
Vineyard and restoration
AM Espace Chenot morning programme The morning is dedicated to the Espace Chenot at L'Albereta. A private consultation with one of the resident specialists establishes a programme tailored to your current state. Treatments are sequenced to restore balance rather than follow a fixed menu.
PM The estate park In the afternoon, explore the estate's 61-hectare park, where contemporary sculptures are set among the vineyards.
Eve Dinner at Leone Felice The estate's main restaurant, where seasonal Franciacorta cuisine and the property's own wines provide a relaxed close to the day.
★ Morning medical wellness consultation at the Espace Chenot Overnight: L'Albereta Relais & Châteaux
Espace Chenot, L'Albereta / Leone Felice restaurant, Franciacorta
The Chenot Method is a medically supervised approach to wellness developed over four decades, combining Western diagnostics with principles of Chinese energetic medicine. The 2,000 sqm facility at L'Albereta is the longest-running Chenot facility in Italy.
08 Day Eight . Arrival in the Dolomites
The climb to Forestis
AM Depart Franciacorta after breakfast Private car to the Dolomites, approximately three and a half to four hours.
PM Arrive at Forestis, Bressanone Check in to Forestis at 1,800 metres on the southern slope of the Plose mountain. After arrival, take a short walk through the surrounding forest or spend time on the terrace as the altitude begins to settle.
Eve First dinner at Forestis Dinner marks the transition into a slower, more restorative rhythm. Chef Roland Lamprecht's forest cuisine draws from the landscape directly surrounding the hotel.
Overnight: Forestis, Bressanone
Forestis, Bressanone / Dolomite massif from Plose mountain
Forestis sits at 1,800 metres, built around a 1912 Habsburg-era structure and expanded with three sculptural towers. The property is adults-only; guests must be 14 or older. Access is via a private mountain road from Bressanone.
09 Day Nine . Forestis
First full day in the mountains
AM Privately guided hike on Plose mountain Routes move through forest and open alpine meadow, with wide views across the Dolomite massif. Tailored to your pace and energy level. The route can be extended along the ridgeline or oriented toward the Odle (Geisler) peaks.
Noon Lunch at the hotel Return for lunch, followed by time at the Forestis Spa: indoor and outdoor pools, sauna and quiet spaces overlooking the Dolomites.
Eve Dinner at Forestis The stepped restaurant positions each table for privacy with uninterrupted views across the forest and Dolomites at sunset. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring the landscape fully into the space.
★ Private guided hike across the Plose ridgeline, with views toward the Odle peaks Overnight: Forestis, Bressanone
Plose mountain hiking, Dolomites / Forestis Spa outdoor pool
Summer hiking in the Dolomites follows a reliable pattern. Mornings are clear; afternoon thunderstorms are common from July through August. The practical approach is to depart early and reach a rifugio or destination before midday.
10 Day Ten . Forestis
The spa and the forest
AM Full morning treatment session, Tree Circle protocol A morning treatment session with the Forestis team, built around the Tree Circle protocol. Each treatment is personalised to your physical and energetic state at the time, combining touch techniques, healing stones, sound frequencies and essences derived from one of four native trees: mountain pine, spruce, larch or Swiss stone pine.
PM A walk through the forest The afternoon is lighter: a short walk through the forest directly from the hotel, or time on the terrace with the Dolomites filling the view to the south.
Eve Dinner at Forestis Chef Roland Lamprecht's forest cuisine draws from the same landscape you have spent the day inside.
★ Full-morning treatment session at the Forestis Spa, built around the Tree Circle protocol Overnight: Forestis, Bressanone
Forestis Spa Tree Circle treatment / forest walk from Forestis
The Tree Circle protocol is rooted in Celtic forest traditions. The four native trees used in treatment each correspond to different physical and energetic states. Spa treatments should be pre-booked before arrival to secure preferred session times.
11 Day Eleven . Into the Puez-Odle
Beneath the Geisler peaks
AM Half-day excursion into the wider Dolomites A scenic drive of approximately 45 to 60 minutes depending on route and conditions. The Adolf Munkel Trail offers a gentle loop beneath the Odle peaks.
Noon Lunch at Rifugio delle Odle Lunch on the terrace at the rifugio, directly beneath the Geisler peaks. Simple, local dishes served in one of the defining settings in the eastern Alps.
PM Return to Forestis Return for the afternoon and dinner at leisure.
★ Lunch on the terrace at Rifugio delle Odle, directly beneath the Geisler peaks Overnight: Forestis, Bressanone
Adolf Munkel Trail, Odle peaks / Rifugio delle Odle terrace
The Geisler peaks form the backbone of the Puez-Odle Nature Park. The limestone formations are characteristic of the Dolomites: pale in flat light, turning amber and rose at the edges of the day.
D Departure . Dolomites
Last morning at elevation
AM No fixed structure A morning walk through the forest, the pool, breakfast taken slowly on the terrace. The pace of the final morning at Forestis is the point.
Departure Onward transfer Departure is after lunch. Innsbruck Airport is approximately two hours by private car. Verona Airport is approximately two and a half hours. Milan Malpensa is approximately three hours.
Forestis terrace at dawn / Dolomites morning light
Eleven nights does not exhaust northern Italy. It is, structured this way, enough to understand the city, the lake, the vineyards and the mountains with a quality of attention that a shorter version of any one of them would not produce.

Accommodation

Four properties. Four registers.

Urban, lacustrine, viticultural, alpine: each property on this journey has a distinct character determined by what surrounds it. The Bulgari's private garden in Milan. Passalacqua's descent to the lake. L'Albereta's vineyard position and Chenot spa. Forestis at 1,800 metres with the Dolomites filling the view south. Together they form a journey through contrast rather than accumulation.
