Indonesia: The Coastal Passage

Indonesia is not one country in any conventional sense. It is a maritime civilisation held together by water: seventeen thousand islands and three hundred languages, where for most of its history the only road between two places was the sea. To see it properly you move the way it has always moved, by boat, slowly, at the pace the water allows.

This journey begins and ends in Bali, but Bali is the frame, not the subject. Two nights at Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay to arrive and slow down, then five aboard the Amandira through Komodo, then two at Amandari in Ubud to come back to land in the highlands rather than the airport. Between the resorts sits the part that matters: a hand-built phinisi, chartered to you alone, working its way through one of the densest marine environments on earth.

The expedition runs on the captain's reading of the sea, not a printed schedule. Dragons on Rinca, drift dives where the current concentrates the fish into walls, a sand atoll with open water on every side. This is for people who already know that the most considered way to travel somewhere is rarely the quickest, and who would rather lose mobile signal past Labuan Bajo than keep it.

Signature Moments
I Dragons on Rinca

A morning tender to Loh Buaya and a trek through dry scrubland with a park ranger. Komodo dragons move through the ground in numbers here, three metres of them, and you cover the same ground on foot with the ranger a few paces ahead. Buffalo and deer graze nearby as if none of it were unusual. The largest living lizards on earth, met at eye level, on their terrain.

II The ridge at Padar

A short, steep climb from the anchorage to the top of Padar Island, where three bays of three different colours sit below you, divided by knife-edge ridgelines running down to the water. It is the most photographed view in Komodo and one of the few that is better in person than in the picture.

III The drifts at Gili Lawa

Crystal Rock, Castle Rock and the Shotgun, where the current funnels through a narrow channel and packs the water with marine life. These are drift dives, and the strongest ask for some experience moving with a current; the dive master sorts ability on the first day and shapes the week around it. Snorkellers get the calmer reefs, no less alive. The day closes with a climb up Gili Lawa Darat as the sun drops behind Sumbawa, the Sangeang volcano smoking on the horizon.

Day by Day
Arrival . Jimbaran Bay
Land, and let the pace drop
PM Private transfer to the coast Arrive at Ngurah Rai and transfer privately to Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay, about 20 minutes south along the coast. The villa looks down over the bay, the fishing village lighting up along the shore as the sun goes.
Evening Dinner over the bay Dinner at the resort or on your own terrace, and an early night after the flights.
Overnight: Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay
Jimbaran Bay at sunset
The bay below, the fishing boats lighting up one by one.
Day 1 . Jimbaran Bay
A day that asks nothing of you
Day Entirely at leisure Nothing scheduled. The pool, the beach, a Balinese massage at the spa, a yoga session if you want one, or the villa and its infinity pool and not much else. This day exists to clear the journey out of your system before the expedition starts.
Overnight: Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay
Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay villa pool
Decompression is the only item on the agenda.
Day 2 . Embarkation
Bali behind you, the boat ahead
AM Fly to Labuan Bajo A morning flight to Labuan Bajo on the western tip of Flores, an hour in the air during which Bali's terraced green gives way to dry volcanic ridgeline.
PM Aboard Amandira The crew welcomes you aboard and the Cruise Director runs through the days ahead. The vessel departs for Sabayor, lunch on deck as the port recedes, the first dive on the reef that afternoon.
Overnight: Amandira
Lunch on deck aboard Amandira
Lunch on deck, the harbour shrinking behind the wake.
Day 3 . Gili Lawa
The park's best water, then its best ridge
AM The celebrated dive sites North to Gili Lawa Laut and the celebrated sites: Crystal Rock, Castle Rock, the Shotgun. The dive master curates the day around conditions and ability.
PM Sunset ridge at Gili Lawa Darat The vessel moves to Gili Lawa Darat for the night, and a short climb from shore reaches a ridge with an unobstructed view across the park as the sun drops behind Sumbawa, the silhouette of the active Sangeang volcano on the horizon.
Overnight: Amandira
Labuan Bajo
The current does the work; you just hold position and watch.
Day 4 . Batu Balong
A pinnacle, a shallow reef, and the boat finding its rhythm
AM Two contrasting sites South into the centre of the park. Batu Balong is a submerged pinnacle rising from deep water, its walls thick with soft coral, reef sharks and turtles working the current. Siaba Besar is shallower and more colourful, easy water for snorkelling and a long unhurried swim.
PM Beach setup A beach setup in the afternoon, the vessel at anchor offshore. By now life aboard has settled into something that feels entirely natural.
Overnight: Amandira
Lionfish, Komodo National Park
By the fourth day the boat stops feeling like a boat.
Day 5 . Rinca & Padar
Dragons in the morning, the great view by midday
AM Rinca on foot An early tender to Rinca and a ranger-led trek through Loh Buaya, where the dragons move in numbers across the dry ground.
Midday The Padar ridge Back aboard, then a cruise to Padar and the steep short climb to its ridge, three coloured bays below split by sharp ridgelines. The most dramatic day on the water, front to back.
Overnight: Amandira
Komodo dragon
Three metres of dragon, met on foot, on its own ground.
Day 6 . Pulau Makassar
Turtles, a sand atoll, the last sunset afloat
AM Turtle dive The final full day at sea opens with a turtle dive in the centre of the park, green and hawksbill turtles reliable through the clear water.
PM Lunch on the atoll Lunch on Pulau Makassar, a low strip of white sand in open water where the sea runs in every direction. The afternoon takes its own pace, and the Cruise Director arranges the evening to close the voyage as it should be closed.
Overnight: Amandira
Pulau Makassar sand atoll
A low strip of white sand, open water on every side.
Day 7 . Sea to Highlands
Off the water and up into Ubud
AM Disembark and fly to Bali Breakfast as Amandira returns to Labuan Bajo. Disembark, fly back to Bali, then transfer inland to Amandari, around 75 to 90 minutes through coastal plain giving way to rice terrace and river valley.
PM Arrive Amandari Amandari sits above the Ayung gorge, its freestanding suites built into the setting rather than onto it. Dinner at the resort, an easy evening.
Overnight: Amandari, Ubud
Rice terrace, Ayung valley
The sea swapped for the gorge, salt for frangipani.
Day 8 . Ubud
The other Indonesia, inland and highland
Day Active or contemplative, your call A different country to the one you just sailed: Hindu-Balinese, highland, slower again. Walk the Ayung valley rice terraces with a guide, visit the Agung Rai or Blanco Renaissance museums, reach the Ubud market before the crowds, or sit a private batik or offering-making class. Or none of it, and the spa and the gorge-view pool instead.
Evening The last dinner The last dinner of the journey is wherever the evening takes you.
Overnight: Amandari, Ubud
Macaques, Ubud
Hindu-Balinese highland, the maritime world a week behind.
Departure . Onward
Out through the terraces
AM Private transfer to the airport A private transfer to the airport, around 90 minutes, timed for a comfortable check-in. The drive out passes through the same terraced green that met you on the way in.
Departure: Ngurah Rai International Airport
Ubud rice fields
The same rice fields, going the other way.

Aman's private expedition phinisi, 52 metres, twin-masted, handcrafted from local hardwoods by Konjo artisans of South Sulawesi. Optional Enhancements

The ship's spa therapist builds a wellness thread across the five sea days: massages, yoga on the sundeck, a wellness-focused menu from the private chef. Arranged with the Cruise Director in advance.

Extended expedition

The Komodo voyage extends from five nights to seven, reaching further into the eastern archipelago. Subject to Amandira's seasonal schedule and availability.

Pricing From USD $160,000 Indicative pricing for two guests. Includes two nights at Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay in a Premier Ocean Villa, a full five-night private charter of Amandira in the Master Cabin, two nights at Amandari in a Pool Suite, internal flights between Bali and Labuan Bajo, all private transfers, the curated programme throughout, and all permits and Komodo National Park conservation fees. Amandira is chartered as a whole vessel, so for groups of four or more the per-person value rises considerably across the five cabins. International flights are not included. Enquire Now Final pricing confirmed at time of booking and tailored to dates, suite selection and any enhancements. The expedition runs in the dry season only and the vessel books on a fixed seasonal rotation; early confirmation is strongly recommended.

Before You Book

Best Time to Travel

April to October only. Amandira leaves Komodo for the wet season from November to March. May to August is the peak window, with southeast trade winds and underwater visibility frequently beyond 20 metres; September and October hold the same water clarity with fewer boats in the park.

Planning Your Trip

Amandira is a full private charter for up to ten guests across five cabins, on a fixed seasonal rotation, so dates need committing rather than holding, especially June to August when demand is highest. The strongest dive sites, Crystal Rock, Castle Rock and the Shotgun, involve drift diving and suit guests with some prior experience, though the dive master tailors every day to ability and snorkellers are equally well served throughout.
