Overview

One Hour with a Mountain Gorilla Family. Five Days on the Serengeti.

Begin in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, trekking through bamboo forest to spend one carefully managed hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family.

Stay at Singita Kwitonda for three or four nights, leaving time for a second trek or a day at the lodge before flying by light aircraft to Tanzania. From there, spend five days in Singita's Grumeti concession in the western Serengeti, with morning and afternoon game drives, bush lunches and sundowners on the plains.

Two very different wildlife experiences, with enough time in each place to see more than a single encounter.

Signature Moments
I One Hour with the Gorillas

An hour spent quietly observing a habituated mountain gorilla family in their natural habitat, one of the world's most remarkable wildlife encounters.

II Sundowners on the Serengeti

Stop on the open plains towards the end of the day for drinks as the temperature drops and the light changes. Wildlife remains around you, and there's nowhere you need to be until it's time to return to camp.

III Five Days in Grumeti

Spend five days exploring the Grumeti concession rather than moving between safari camps every night or two. Returning to the same areas with your guide gives you time to follow wildlife over several days and see how activity changes from morning to evening.

Day by Day

The itinerary in full

Arrival · Kigali
Arrival in Rwanda
PM The Retreat by Heaven Private transfer from Kigali International Airport to The Retreat by Heaven, in a leafy residential part of the city. The remainder of the afternoon is free to settle in after your flight.
Eve Dinner Keep the first evening simple with dinner at the hotel before travelling north tomorrow.
Overnight: The Retreat by Heaven
Kigali
Kigali is home to one of Africa's most important memorial sites, the Kigali Genocide Memorial.
Day 1 · Volcanoes National Park
Into the Highlands
AM North to Volcanoes National Park Drive north from Kigali through terraced hills and farmland, climbing towards Volcanoes National Park as the Virunga volcanoes come into view.
PM Singita Kwitonda Arrive at Singita Kwitonda with the afternoon to settle in. Before tomorrow's trek, the lodge team will take you through the practicalities of the morning, including ranger protocols and porter support.
Overnight: Singita Kwitonda Lodge
Singita Kwitonda Lodge
Singita Kwitonda sits at the edge of Volcanoes National Park. The volcanic soil is dark and the forest begins almost at the lodge boundary.
Day 2 · Gorilla Trekking
Into the Forest
AM Gorilla Trek Transfer to park headquarters to meet your ranger before entering Volcanoes National Park. Trackers locate the gorilla families each morning, and the length of the trek depends on where they have moved overnight.
Midday One Hour with the Gorillas Once you reach the family, spend one carefully managed hour observing the gorillas as they feed, forage, rest and interact in the forest.
PM Back at Kwitonda Return to the lodge with the afternoon free for lunch, the spa or simply time overlooking the Virunga Mountains.
Overnight: Singita Kwitonda Lodge
Gorilla trekking, Volcanoes National Park
Eighty permits per day. One hour maximum. Seven metres minimum. The constraint is the point.
Day 3 · Volcanoes National Park
Conservation and a Free Afternoon
AM Conservation Meet a conservation specialist to learn more about mountain gorilla family structures, ongoing research and the conservation work that has supported the population's recovery.
PM At Leisure Visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, walk near the forest edge or spend the afternoon at Kwitonda.
Overnight: Singita Kwitonda Lodge
Volcanoes National Park
The Virunga Massif is one of Africa's most biodiverse landscapes. On a clear day, the Congo border is visible from the lodge.
Day 4 · Volcanoes National Park
A Second Trek, or a Day at Kwitonda
AM Optional Second Gorilla Trek If you've chosen a second permit, return to Volcanoes National Park to track a different gorilla family, often in another part of the forest. Otherwise, keep the morning free at Kwitonda.
PM At Leisure Spend your final afternoon in Rwanda at the lodge.
Overnight: Singita Kwitonda Lodge
Rwanda highlands
A second permit requires advance booking and is not guaranteed. No two gorilla encounters are the same: different families have different dynamics, different elevations, different forest.
Day 5 · Serengeti
Rwanda to Tanzania
AM Fly to the Serengeti Return to Kigali and fly by light aircraft into Tanzania. From the air, the forested highlands give way to the open plains of the Serengeti.
PM Singita Grumeti Arrive in Singita's Grumeti concession and settle into Sabora Tented Camp or Faru Faru Lodge. If time allows, head out for a first game drive before sunset.
Overnight: Singita Sabora Tented Camp or Singita Faru Faru Lodge
Serengeti from the air
Luggage on light aircraft is restricted to 15kg per person in soft-sided bags only. Hard-shell suitcases cannot be accommodated. Excess luggage can be stored in Kigali or Arusha.
Days 6–10 · Serengeti
Five Days in Grumeti
AM Morning Game Drives Leave camp around first light with your private guide, following tracks and wildlife activity rather than a fixed route. The plan changes each day according to what is happening across the reserve.
During the Day On Safari Spend the next five days exploring the Grumeti concession, returning to camp between drives or staying out for a bush lunch. Afternoons may continue into sundowners on the plains before returning after dark.
With several days in one area, there's time to return to sightings, follow a pride or herd over more than one drive, and spend longer watching when something interesting begins to unfold.
Overnight: Singita Sabora Tented Camp or Singita Faru Faru Lodge
Serengeti safari
Stay a little longer and the Serengeti changes. A pride asleep at noon may be on the move by sunset.
Departure · Tanzania
A Final Morning
AM Last Game Drive Head out once more for a final morning on the plains before returning to camp.
Departure To the Airstrip Transfer to the airstrip for your light aircraft connection and onward international flight.
Serengeti departure
From Rwanda's forests to five days on the Serengeti plains.

Before You Book

When to Travel

June to September is our preferred period for this experience, combining Rwanda's drier trekking conditions with excellent safari conditions in Tanzania. The Serengeti offers strong wildlife viewing throughout the year, while the location of the Great Migration changes with rainfall and season.

Gorilla Permits

Gorilla trekking permits are limited and should be secured well in advance, particularly during the drier months. A second trek requires a separate permit and is subject to availability.

Our Tailored Experiences give you the inside knowledge and access of a seasoned local, knowing exactly where to stay, where to dine and where to go - before you've even arrived.

BOOK WITH PURPOSE

At Suite Collection, we believe that extraordinary travel should leave the world a little better than we found it. That's the idea behind our Book with Purpose initiative. For every reservation made through our platform, a portion of the proceeds is directed to one of the world's leading non-for-profit charities.

Each month, Suite Collection nominates one of our preferred charities, partnering with our guests to give back to a greater cause.

CONCIERGE ACCESS WITH EVERY BOOKING

Once a reservation is confirmed, a member of our team personally reaches out - not with an automated message, but with a genuine conversation to understand the finer details of the trip, anticipate our guests' needs, and shape the experience around them. That might mean arranging a private transfer, letting the property know about a special occasion ahead of arrival or securing tickets to a VIP event - whatever it takes, we're here to help elevate every journey you embark on.

THE MOST REWARDING LOYALTY PROGRAM

At Suite Collection, we don't do points. Loyalty programmes ask guests to wait and collect - we'd rather listen.

Every stay includes a considered surprise and delight, something chosen because we've taken the time to understand what you actually loves, not because it ticks a rewards-tier box. It's waiting for you when they arrive, not redeemed after the fact. That's the difference: points reward loyalty to a programme. We reward the guest.
